Blue crab is among the most valuable crustaceans in the US. The east coast is famous for them, having established its still-thriving industry in Maryland during the 1870s. Periodically blue crabs go through a molting of their outer shell. When caught just after molting, they present a soft shell that is entirely edible and full of flavor!
Our frozen soft shell Maryland blue crabs are "Primes" size (4 ½ - 5"). Sold by the each, they are cleaned, individually wrapped, frozen and ready for preparation. A beloved item in sushi bars, soft crab is commonly deep fried whole and used for spider rolls or other popular rolls. Soft crab is also a pleasure to eat outside of sushi environments. Try it with butter, lemon and capers; tucked between sandwich buns; or served atop your favorite salad. For best results in cooking, we recommend frying or pan searing. Due to their lack of hard outer shell, soft crabs tend to fall apart when boiled or grilled.
To defrost, place product in the refrigerator for 12 to 24 hours.
